The Project
Work within the historic Scottish Rite Masonic Cathedral involved rehabilitation of an existing hardwood floor system while protecting the surrounding historic interior and recovering salvageable material.
KAV Scope
KAV participated in selective hardwood demolition, salvage and recycling; reinforcement of the existing sleeper system; mortar floating and infill between sleeper cavities; placement of vapor barrier; and installation of the plywood subfloor system. KAV also completed upholstered carpet work in other rooms and stage areas of the broader project, along with work on a wall pew system.
Historic Floor-System Approach
Rather than treating the work as a simple finish-floor replacement, the sequence addressed the underlying sleeper cavities and support conditions first. Mortar infill and reinforcement were completed before the vapor barrier and plywood subfloor were installed, creating the prepared assembly for the next finish phase.
Outcome
KAV carried the main hall through hardwood removal and recovery, sleeper and substrate rehabilitation, moisture separation and plywood subfloor installation, while also completing carpet and related finish work in other areas of the cathedral project.
